Hi. I am having a hard time buying gifts for my 4 year old son. The problem is: most age appropriate toys for his age group seem geared more towards the 2 year or educational (which is good, but not the end all of gifts) and boys his age want things that are generally labeled 6 and up (from my current walk through toys with him). So, what I want to know is this: What are you buying your 4 year old this year for Christma? Thanks

This is a good question - I have found that designated ages for toys are guidelines - it depends on the child. We have often found toys for older boys perfectly fine for ours.
As for more educational toys - we usually specifically look for these - like models, Lego projects, robotics, science projects, games, books - we've found some neat ones with puzzles in them - our boys really enjoy these - also sports games, educational or story book DVDs - National Geographic DVDs. For us - we also homeschool - we really take pride in what they watch, play, or do being something of long term educational value - financially it makes more sense for us. There are so many things that are FUN - but they are learning something too. One of ours has asked for a Sarah McLachlan CD in his stocking - It's fun for us - our boys' music tastes are on par with ours. Let us know what you are looking at - I'll start paying more attention to what they pick out at the store for reference when we begin shopping for Christmas. |

Well, Little Man will be four in January, right after Christmas, Lego's we have tried, but we have to get the big ones, he still puts the little ones in his mouth. Loves cars, and trains, still a big to do about Thomas, but I think he's ready for a race trac, the radio controlled kind. He does very well with his trains on the tracks, I think he would like that. Also he climbs and jumps on every bed in the house, so we were thinking of getting him a trampoline, small version, with the gaurd/cage around it. Just some ideas.
Your in a valley when your focused on what's missing, your at a peak when you appreciate what you have . |

You can go to both Walmart.com and ToysRUs.com and shop by age/gender. Looks like a good place to start looking for ideas!

this is a good topic. I am a momma of a 4 year old little boy. I can't think of anything he wants that is geared age appropriate for him.
Considering he has so many big brothers, I really didn't have a choice with what Ryan played with- within reason. Moms know their own children best. If you feel your child can handle toys for older children especially in a supervised environment you could consider that toy(s). Ryan (my 4 year old) loves play dooh, paint, markers- anything to be creative and messy! He also loves star wars men, legos, and bionicles His favorite thing is dressing up. He has so many costumes Knights, ninja, fireman, darth vadar, cowboy, pirate, swat, etc. |

My daughter will be 4 next week. She loves lego and I would consider adding to her stocks.
For Christmas, I am seriously considering one of the phonics based learning systems. She is obsessed with letters, what each word begins with, and is starting to sound out words - I was thinking this would encourage that - educational and fun at the same time. We are also concentrating on outside type toys - since the weather is so nice over the winter months I hope that both my kids will be outside more frequently than they were in the summer - they can't really take the heat for long (and truth be told, neither can I lol!) |

I have a four year old boy who has lots of older brothers so we already have tons of legos (which are a favorite for the older ones). My 4 year old loves playdoh. We got new playdoh sets for him every year and he and the older ones play with them often. He also loves to dress up in costumes. I got him a cowboy outfit and play cowboy gun with a holster for Christmas. He also loves to play with pretend food. I got him a wooden pizza party set from Melissa and Doug along with other play food sets for his little sister that I am sure he will also play with. Of course, dinosaurs also remain a favorite for him. Imaginext has some great ones.

I also have a 4 year old son - and a 3 year old son. This weekend, my boys went through the WalMart catalog and checked what they want. (The book is loaded with check marks now).
Both boys are into Lego's - as many others mentioned, Dinosaurs, Power Rangers, and any kind of Action Figures are popular with these two. Most things that my kids are into state ages 6+, but they seem to work. I am also buying a trampoline with enclosure for the boys for Christmas - their cousins have one, and my boys love it. Also, both my boys have the scooters - the scooters with 3 wheels. These are very popular. Also, Power Wheels - costly, approx. $200, but, in my opinion, very worth it. Both my boys absolutely love the Power Wheels. My husband & I both agree that it was the best investment that we could have ever made. |
