This may not be news for some of you, but I have some things to add and would love to discuss this.
Did any of you ladies implement the no sales tax holiday in the past? What are your feelings on it being voted down this year? Good for the state? Bad for your wallet? Lawmakers say ''no'' to school sales tax holiday Food for thought. If you find yourself in Georgia during July 31 – August 3, 2008, you could utilize their sales tax holiday. Yep, Georgia gets one, and Florida doesn't. More on Georgia's sales tax holiday here: Georgia Department of Revenue ~Mother to Brandon, Austin, Ethan, Ryan and Lillian~ Breaking Lillian of the bink. If you happen to be in Alabama Aug. 1 - Aug. 3 they're also having the tax holiday again this year.

Well, that puts a damper on school shopping for my little sister. But we did get stimulus checks for the first time this year. So, I'm not complaining.

I didn't use it and my mom never really did either- I feel that its not worth fighting through people for $7.00 if I spent $100. I'd much rather pay the extra $7 dollars then deal with people when they have sales or no tax- I don't do the day after Thanksgiving anymore either (found that most places have the same sales online)

I HAVE TO ADMIT I DID USE IT LAST YEAR, BUT AS I SAID BEFORE TRINITY ATTENDS A SCHOOL THAT YOU CAN ONLY BUY HER UNIFORMS FROM ONE PLACE, IT COST ME OVER $450.00 LAST YEAR, WITH A TAX SAVINGS OF 31.50, WELL OF COURSE MY CHILDREN GROW LIKE WEEDS AND WE ARE GOING TO HAVE TO DO IT AGAIN THIS YEAR. I COULD HANDLE THE $30 SAVINGS. AND WE DIDN'T GET A STIMULAS CHECK THIS YEAR, SO OH WELL, GOTTA GO FILL UP THE GAS TANK......OOPS AM I COMPLAINING TOO MUCH?

From what I understand this year there is no tax holiday for either the hurrricane prep season or school tax holiday like there has been in years past, because of the passing of Amendment 1. I guess because the state is actually getting less revenue in taxes now they have to recup the losses so no tax holiday.

HHMMM another reason I was screaming to vote "No" on Amendment 1.

I will have to agree with Tripsi on this one. I have never used the Tax holiday. I just always tried to shop the best sales I could. And actually, you might get better deals shopping the sales, than saving on the taxes....just a though. Not sure.

even though i don't have a school aged child i did shop the tax free week last year. somethings seem like they just don't go on sale. like socks. so i bought socks and there were awesome sneaker deals last year. i will miss not having this, this year.
i didn't not feel like there were crowds the days i was at the stores. |

I will really miss the tax holiday. I always stocked up on diapers which were tax exempt. I would stockpile my coupons just for those days so that I could save even more.

I have taken advantage of the school holiday tax for the last two years and I am saddened by the State not having that "holiday" again this year! Prices everywhere are going up, up, up! Something's got to give!
VegasMom, I agree, Amendment 1 is really, REALLY hurting us now. I hope those that were blind-sided by the extra $200 bucks think this is all worth it. How is this affecting all you moms with more than one child? As a mom who will have two in school this year it hurts, for sure. I am glad I found some of Alyssa's old clothes that Alexis can wear this year. It's not much... but it's a start! I don't have a name anymore, I've simply become "Alyssa's mom" or "Alexis' mom" |

Even though we homeschool, ours still need all the same things as everyone else - clothing, socks, shoes, etc - so we've taken advantage of the tax free week and the sales that usually go along with them. We know some whose grandparents would buy all their granchildren their school stuff every year without fail, but we've never had that privilege, this tax free "holiday" has helped us out tremendously in the long run, too - we would always buy looking ahead also, getting a few larger sizes, too. Just stock up.
I have no problem admitting, we've bought huge boxes of consecutive size clothing on eBay that we're still running through, too. And hitting consignment shops is a good thing, we've found great deals on clothing that look brand spankin' new! PS---Jen, we can relate, just trying hand-me-downs from one child to the next may not work, they each have different body types and things fit differently, handing down doesn't always work out for us either. I know sometimes I may have been saving a few dollars here and there. For me a few dollars is a few dollars. Momma is on a budget!
I did do the tax exempt shopping. I enjoyed it. Most of the places I shopped at would have great sales on with the additional incentive of no sales tax, plus usually I had extra % off coupons. I was getting such good deals sometimes I felt sorry for the store, lol. ~Mother to Brandon, Austin, Ethan, Ryan and Lillian~ Breaking Lillian of the bink. Just call me, "The Bad Guy" |

OK I have been dying to share this with you guys (but I couldn't get on the site earlier)... Alyssa and I went to Wal-Mart (Auburndale) this morning to pick up some school supplies and when I was checking out I found that the spiral note books are on sale for five cents a piece!! FIVE CENTS! I checked out and then went back and got more. I've got two boxes of spiral notebooks and I plan on getting more in the morning! The lady at the check out said they had been sold out of them because people were buying them by the boxes (as I did, lol) and that they just got more that morning. So I am not sure how long they are going to last but I just wanted to share that with you. They also had crayons for .17 cents (RoseArt, Crayolas were .22 cents). They had colored pencils for .60 cents and I think the two-pack of glue sticks were .50 cents. Regular packages of paper were .50 cents as well! They also had lots of Hannah Montana school supplies- Alyssa just *had* to have the H.M. pencils, one spiral notebook, glue stick, back pack, and lunch box, lol.
I also wanted to throw this out there... I know times are rough on all of us but when you're getting supplies think about the teachers... a lot of them spend their own money to make sure the kids have supplies. I know last year my daughters teacher ran out of the spiral notebooks and I went out and bought more to donate but they were full price and I couldn't buy a bunch. So that is part of why I bought so many. I also got extra boxes of crayons to donate to the classroom. I know sometimes (especially as a single mom) that it's hard to stretch my paycheck to the next but I know there are those out there who have it harder than me and don't have a means to buy these supplies. So I always buy extra and donate. If we all were able to pitch in a little we'd make such a huge dent that the teachers might actually not have to worry about spending their money to make sure the kids have supplies! I don't have a name anymore, I've simply become "Alyssa's mom" or "Alexis' mom" |
