One of my biggest hobbies that I love is genealogical research. I am not sure if any of you would be interested but thought I would pass along this information.
Polk County has one of the largest genealogical libraries in the southeast (at one point it was the largest, it could still be?) It is located in the old Bartow Courthouse in downtown Bartow. They also have a subscription to ancestry.com, which can be pretty costly to have in your own home. If anyone would ever like to tag along with me on a trip, I would be more than glad to arrange a time to go. I don’t get to go as often as I like because it is not child friendly. I would suggest finding someone to keep your kids if you go. Saturdays are neat to go. There’s a farmers market every Saturday in downtown Bartow right at the library entrance. http://www.tblc.org/members/showagency.php?in[agency_id]=213 ~Mother to Brandon, Austin, Ethan, Ryan and Lillian~ |

My husband's aunt just paid ancestory.co to research their side of the family and found out he is related to alot of famous people, Elvis and several presidents. I would love to find out more about my side. I do know that I am somehow related to Princess Di, I would love to know how distant she is.
When Sophie gets alittle older I would love to come. |

I think I would like to learn more about my family line and my husband's, too. My husband knows some about his family, most are in/from WV. He has a big family. Thanks for the info, Shawn. I may have to check that out sometime (when I can get a sitter, of course!).

Cool! I am glad to have gotten some interest. I love history, and what history is better than your own.
I have found some very cool and colorful characters in my tree and of course some tragic stories. My great great grandfather was killed in the civil war. His wife(my great, great grandmother) was left to raise so many children on her own with a man shortage through out the area. Horses and livestock were gone or scarce. I have a great, great, great Aunt that supposedly pulled a plow herself for lack of an animal. We are talking about a lady of a very well to do southern family Pre-Civil war. It is amazing what women have done during war time, at any war to take care of their family. I have considered writing a book loosely based on some of my ancestors. The stories, generations, and people are there, you just have to find them. Not all people are into it and only look to the future, but I think it is important and interesting to find out where you came from. There are definitely tips and tricks to help get you started. ~Mother to Brandon, Austin, Ethan, Ryan and Lillian~ |
