One of my fears when I became a mom came true today. It’s not a big one but I still freaked out. I locked my 4 month old son in the house with my purse. I just got home from running to the store. I always bring him and my purse into the house first. I left him in his car seat facing the door so he could see me came in and out. I was getting the last of the things from the car and a gust of wind shut the door. Which was no big deal but when I walked up to the door the door was locked. I started to freak out. I live a few streets away from LHS and some students were walking home. So I stopped a girl and asked her if I could use her cell phone. I called my dad to bring me my spare key. It would only take him 10 mins to get there, but I could not wait. My son was crying. I knew his diaper needed to be changed and he was hungry. I could not wait 10 mins it seemed like eternity. Fortunately we have a doggy door, but it was shut. So I sat there and was able to open it. I looked at the door and thought there is only one way to figure out if I fit through the door and I did fit. My son was crying until he saw me crawling though the doggy door and started to laugh. He probably thought his mom is crazy. Locking him in the house was not a big deal, but I also have a fear that I will lock him in the car.

Has this happen to anyone else? If so what have you done?

i haven't locked my daughter in the house. but she is just tall enough to reach the door lock. a couple weeks ago i walked out to grab the mail and she was watching her fav tv show before her nap. well after i walked out of the house she ran to the door and slamed it shut and locked it behind me. luckliy the back door was open so i walked around the back and got in. now i know to grab my house key any time i walk out of the house just in case.

When our son was about 5 months old my husband accidently locked him in his car. The car was running because he had just jumped out to chase our cat back into the house and the wind blew the door shut. I had his spare set of keys at work, good thing I work less than two minutes from the house. He called me and said I had two minutes to get home or else he was breaking the window. I made it in record time. Sebastian of course slept through the whole thing. I made fun of him about it for weeks, until I managed to lock the baby in the house. I had sat him down in his car seat by the front door while I loaded the car for soccer practice. I pulled the door shut behind me and locked myself out. I had to sit there and make funny faces at Sebastian through the window while I waited on Marc to get here. It was the longest five minutes. Since then we have switched to the deadbolt locks that have to locked with a key Smiler

Camille, I bet you are glad you are skinny for more than one reason (I am assuming so to be able to fit through a doggy door, unless you have a really big dog-lol).

Knock on wood I have been lucky so far not to have done anything like this, but I literally make myself sick over the possibility so I understand your fears. A couple of summers ago there was a rash of babies dying in cars after being left in their seats from parents forgetting they were there. I had this recurring dream that seemed so real that I had left Ryan in his seat. I would literally wake up with tears in my eyes. My grief in my dream seemed so real.

Camille, it is good that you thought it through and was able to remedy the situation.

I could never fit through a doggy door!

My daughter, Vegas, I found out the hard way also knows how to lock me out.

I was taking laundry to the washer (my laundry room is off of the back porch) and she locked me out using the dead-bolt. Of course the front door was locked and she thought it was sooo funny! Our back door is half glass so I sat out there for about five minutes staring right at her while telling her "Please let Mommy back in, just turn the lock the other way, no the other way." until she finally did.

Now, I have one of thse key-hiding thingies in my laundry room with a key in it. (I knew even after that I would forget to take one with me next time)
