I was definitely planning a discussion on this. American this is where I was planning to put it also. Smiler A pregnant mom should be able to have time to ponder and make a decision on this.

With Ethan, he was born in Germany in a German hospital. It is not common for European boys to be circumcised. The hospital did not do it. I had to wait until I could get someone at an American clinic to do it. By then he was almost 2 months old. I watched and was even told to help restrain him. They used no anesthetic at all. I was told his nerve ending had not developed yet. I don’t buy that now! He was big enough to fight and hard! He screamed until he couldn’t breathe. I told myself I would never do this to a little boy again.

But then I saw the other side

One of my step sons had a partial circumcision. When I got him, I asked hubby why haven’t you done something about this? My son was having problems with infections in the folds of the skin and yucky build up. It was gross and stinky and almost daily maintenance.
I went to an urologist and he immediately felt it should be taken care of.

Of course I was not there for him when he was born and I am not sure how it happened to not be correct. Moms familiarize yourself on how it should look if you decide to do the procedure. If it doesn’t look right, speak up.

We had surgery to correct my son and he and we are so happy with the results.

After our experience with my stepson, my husband wanted Ryan circumcised and we have had no problems.

I also know a little boy not circumcised. The parents made the decision based on the father not being circumcised. I think the mom now has regrets and wonders if his recurrent urine infections have something to do with the boy not being circumcised.

Depending on which study you read, some have a higher rate of incidence than others; studies have consistently shown a higher rate of STDs contraction when uncircumcised.

I read an article a while back (I will see if I can find it) that discussed circumcision as a class factor for the future. Apparently people having children on Medicaid or with government assistance are not getting their children circumcised due to the government assistance unwillingness to pay for the procedure. Parents have to come up with the money on their own. And some are unable to. The basis of the article was that children could be profiled as poor in the future due to not having a circumcision. Only wealthier or insured parents would have the procedure done.

This is definitely a pros and cons decision you have to make. Good luck in what you decide.

In case any of you didn't see it and would like to check it out, there is a video in the video section of PolkMoms of a local mother's account of not circumcising her sons.

Hello, I'm new here! I just discovered the Polk Moms section! [how sad is that! I read The Ledger all the time online, but just never noticed! Smiler]

With our first son [17 months] we did circumcise...I didn't know any better or realize that there was a choice! [the same with vaccinations!] Through instinct and much research I found my way to attachment parenting and what I was doing [or a lot of it] was lining up with that style].

Now after researching more about the issue I am totally against it and am now praying about it for the sake of my husband and hoping he comes to an agreement with me. I've armed him with information and such and he is open to thinking about not doing it. So we shall see!
I just really hate that it was done to our first son.

There is also a great article that I have from mothering magazine. Right now the online site isn't loading for me. But I'm thinking you can also find that article in there online section.
It is called "The Case Against Circumcision" and the website is www.mothering.com [this is an AP/NFL magazine].

Good to meet you !
