I like to give a wicker laundry basket with baby-sized hangers, baby laundry detergent, stain sticks and a couple of outfits.
I know that a lot of first time moms don't even think about needing special detergent (and I realize that some babies don't need it, but a lot do) and how many stain sticks they'll go through!
i have never given this as a gift but i recomend it to moms i know Totally Toddler. it's a stain & odor remover & prewash. for clothes. i use it all the time when my child spills on her clothes or on my clothes. and i can't remember it not washing a stain out. the last shower i went to a bunch of us went together and we got her a high chair, but it sits on your kitchen chair. it's nice for small houses or small kitchens it doesn't take up much room. and we got her first stage sippy cups and 2nd stage sippy cups. the mesh bag food holders. and a couple containers to hold formula or cereal or whatever. we were glad we did that because she knew she was having a girl and everyone else gave her clothes. we were the only ones that actually gave her things she would need.
greatfulcp, where can you get the Totally Toddler. I have a 2 year old and another one on the way, and while the stain sticks I use do pretty good, I'm always looking for something better!
i got the totally toddler from walmart in the baby section,it a spray bottle. but i have also seen it at toys r us. i love it. it has worked great for me.
I do other gifts as well but I mostly do the same as littleT, -sometimes packed in a wicker laundry hamper or I have used photo storage boxes as the base.
After Easter you can get really good deals on cellophane wrap on clearance. I buy it in bulk and then wrap the baskets with the goodies inside with the cellophane and tie it all together with pretty bows on top, usually blues for boys and pinks for girls and a combo of greens and yellows for the unknown.

Shawn, Hey I got some of that wrap last year after Easter! I found pink & green. I enjoy making baskets from time to time. I was happy that we got baby clothes in sizes up to 24 months at Savannah's shower. We waited to have her shower after her adoption was finalized at seven months. We were so thrilled to get diapers and wipes. We even put formula on our gift registry and we got it. Practical is what we go for!
