I know of at least 5 girls who got pregnant while they had the mirena. Others didn't like it because the irregular bleeding, zpotting for months, nasty discharge some would get. I know two of them had a miscarriage when they took it out and the other the baby was born with it stuck in its head and they had to do surgery to remove it.
I honestly don't think there is no 100% other than no sex- but can't really say that because of Jesus.. =0) I know people who've gotten pregnant on just about every form of birth control- vasectomy's included. Not sure about the esure- but there is no way I'd ever do that one!!! Horror stories heard there too-

You were blessed to not have any complications after having it taken out.

I also have the Mirena IUD. I had it put in after the birth of my son who is now 2. My husband and I are discussing having a 3rd child, but I have heard of cases where womenhave actually had miscarriages after having the IUD taken out. I'm a little concerned about that. Good Luck with your pregnancy!!

Wow, i'm nervous now!!! I have had the IUD for a year this month. I have had random cramps and weird periods that only last about three days with very little bleeding or light spotting for a little longer. I just started feeling sick a day or two ago but I haven't missed a period or anything, I did however have unprotected intercourse right after my period and now here I am feeling sick. I've been telling myself it's that time of year, the weathers changing so maybe i'm coming down with something, i got a little nervous because thats the same thing I told my self last time I was pregnant. I'm going to stop after work and grab a test, which i'm hoping is negative, i'm planning my 2010 wedding, we were going to start trying about two years after we're married which is when the IUD is supposed to come out. I really hope that I am just getting a cold because I really wanted to be slim at my wedding and at least married before baby #2. Pray for me!!!

I have the Mirena IUD ( for almost 3 yrs now)& have loved the fact that I have pretty much no period. I do spot once and a while. But back in Feb. I had a REALLY bad period, I bled for about 2wks & had to use a heating pad for the cramps. I am no sissy when it comes to pain lol...3 natural births I KNOW PAIN...lmao!! Anyhow, I think I was having a misscarrage. Since then I have not had any trouble with it ( knock on wood) But I have not lost my pregnancy weight! I usually gain a bunch of weight while pregnant ( 70 lbs Red Face ) And I always lose it by the time my baby is 6mons. This time I have tried EVERYTHING. My Dr put me on appitete surpess. to help. I have lost 18lbs so far but I have 40 to go. A friend of mine got hers removed because of the weight issue. There is hormones in the Merina but they are supposed to be localized to the uterus & not have to travel threw the whole body just to get to your uterus.

I have to admit I am surprised that so many of you have IUD's!

Did you all go into it asking a doctor to get one, or were you advised by your doctor to get one as a good option?

I know there are different brands and advances, but I have heard too many negative outcomes to IUD's my whole adult life, that I never once even thought it an option for myself.

Maybe some of you never ran into those kind of stories like I have. That is why it’s so important to have a place like this site to share advice and knowledge.

I am so glad that you all are adding testimony to the thread to let other ladies mull over in their decision to possibly go an IUD route.

My doctor advised me to get an IUD because there is some difference in hormones when compared to the pill. The hormones with the pill can lead to blood clots and the hormones with mirena cannot (That's not the medical explanation, but it is my best attempt at paraphrasing!). I had some clotting issues with my second pregnancy and the doctors were not sure if the pill would be safe for me.

My doctor made sure to tell me that IUDs from today are nothing like IUDs from the 70s and 80s. She said that the older versions got a bad reputation for legitimate reasons, but the newer versions do not have the same complications and side effects. I also had never really considered an IUD for myself, but after my medical issues, it made the most sense for me. I know a lot of people have had negative side effects, but I have been really lucky so far and have felt absolutely no negative side effects.

I don't have an IUD but I am looking for a permanent BC method after baby #4 arrives for Thanksgiving. My doctor mentioned Esure (I think is the name) saying it was easy to do in the office and 99.% effective. It sounds easy but it looks pretty new. We are also thinking about a vasectomy. My husband is willing to take it for the team and have this done.
Do you all have any thoughts on either procedure?

We have a Vasectomy thread here on PolkMoms that you can skim through. If anyone else would like to add to it, that would be great.

If you KNOW for sure you are done having children, I vote the vasectomy.

I have one (Merina) and I love it. We are def. done having kids but it was just something I could do while my husband gets up the nerves to get the big snip. So we have 4 years left for him to do it. I asked my ob about it and she said that it was safe while I am nursing, so that was a big plus. I haven't experienced any side effects except a pretty much non existent period, which is great!

Do your research- I was going to do this procedure- then read about a women who had to go to the hospital by ambulance for a blood transfusion as they hit something while going in. Not to mention when I was working in the obgyn I seen several woman come out in a lot of pain. Dr. Puertz said its easy and not that painful if they can find your tubes and not have to search for them. If they have to search and most they have to thats where the pain comes in.
I decided its not whats best for me. But look up Essure complications and read some before you go through with it.

I had an IUD for 5 years between baby #1 and #2.When we decided to have #2 I had the IUD removed and was pregnant in 6 months. I was finished having children so I planned insertion of another IUD. Well, long story short I was pregnant with #3 when I went in for consultation to have IUD inserted, so our girls are 11 months apart and my 3rd delv. was a c section so I had my tubes tied. I never problems to speak of with my IUD. I am unsure if the type I had is still on the market. Paragard T380A(no hormones with this brand).
