You know I thought I really researched about IUDs..but now I think I missed a lot. When I asked my DR about the IUD she HIGHLY recommended Mirena..saying she used it herself..so I thought hey if my Dr is using it..it must be effective..and it probably is..
Since my first post..I have found out that I became pregnant as a result of it be placed wrong!..so my thing now would be.. If your considering the IUD..maybe ask your DR..have they placed many?.. how will they be checking after to make sure that they have placed it correctly.. My doctor checked my IUD once.. she didn't see the strings..(I didn't even feel them when I checked them the day after it was placed) after she said she saw it on a sonogram..I was assured it was in place and it was fine..and we would retrieve the strings during my first period..well here I am 7 weeks pregnant..now fortunately having another baby for us will be ok..and we are very happy, but I know for some women, getting pregnant with an IUD would be earth shattering for them..so I recommend researching..and talking to your doctor or even 2 to make sure an IUD is right for you!Best of luck to all!

cfloresgirl- you have me a little nervous! I also had a female OB/GYN in town place my mirena. There are not that many female OB/GYNs in Lakeland so my mind is racing a little bit wondering if mine is placed wrong!

While you had the mirena, did you have any problems with it? Was it painful or uncomfortable (considering it was in the wrong place)? How did you find out that it was placed incorrectly? Is there any possiblity that it shifted after it was placed?

In case you can't tell by by many questions, I am one of those people who would find another pregnancy to be earth shattering! Since I had the mirena placed, I have seen another OB/GYN for my annual exam and he did not mention it being placed incorrectly- he said it looked good. Did anyone check yours a year or so after placement?

First of all thank you so much for all your well wishes...I'm sorry that this had put a few people on edge Smiler..Bartowmom..I would definitely go back in and have your IUD checked if you have any questions..
With mine..I am really not sure what happened..the latest from my doctor(I'm waiting on another DRs opinion from an ultrasound..to double check the IUD really isn't in there somewhere!!)was it probably wasn't placed correctly (even though we saw it in place via ultrasound a week after it was placed)and I eventually expelled it. What I don't get is why I never noticed? Confused other than that I had no problems..just that heavy cramping right after it was placed..also I had it placed 7 weeks after I delivered my 3rd child..maybe that had something to do with it being expelled..
Also have you had any problems checking the strings?..I know I have read if they seem to be getting longer that you should get it checked to make sure it's not slowly making it's way down and out..
Honestly I think it was a fluke type thing in my case..and that placed correctly IUD's are very effective...Good Luck Ladies!!

Man, it sucks that so many of y'all have had issues with the IUD. I went with the IUD for the same reasons Mommy-of-2 did (migraines with the hormone fluctuations). The pill made me a crasy lady with migraines all the time. I have had my IUD for over 4 years, other than an occasional cramp I've had no issues. I guess I need to consider myself lucky. Smiler

I am 12 weeks pregnant with a Mirena IUD. I am a little nervous about this. I have had two ultrasounds already. I am seeing a high risk doctor now. My last appointment yesterday, they tried to remove the IUD with no luck. The IUD is embedded in the upper part of my uterus. There is no way to get it out at this point. I have been told of the risks and that I need to watch for any signs. Has anyone gone full term with an IUD in??? I am really scared at this point. I have 5 kids already. This will be my 6th child. 3 adopted and 2 biological. This will make my 3rd.

Ms Sarah04.

I have also just found out that I am pregnant despite having a copper IUD fitted 2 years ago with no problems. I am also unable to have the device removed as the embryo is developing under one of the arms of the IUD meaning it would be disturbed if pulled downwards in the removal process.

The doctor said that leaving it in was the only option if I did not want to abort.

I think it is a matter only of wait and see. I don't think anyone really knows the exact % of risk so we will just have to keep our fingers crossed? (although there are some strange claims on the internet!)

I have found some good news stories so it does happen and the doctor seemed to think that many babies can develop just fine next to an IUD. It's the first 14 weeks i think that count....

Let me know how you get on xx

Oh and for anyone reading.....I wouldn't bother with an IUD.....total waste of time. Mine was sitting the correct position and I thought it was working well :-)

Im sorry to hear you are going thru this too. It is rough but I have faith that we will make it through this with healthy beautiful babies. If it makes you feel any better, my doctor recently delived a baby with the copper IUD. Baby is fine and heathly and so was the Mom. I am just hoping for the same with the Mirena.
So far everything is ok. I am now over 15 weeks. I have had a total of 4 ultrasounds. Minor complications but nothing to do with the IUD they think. I also found out that the baby is a girl. So I am really excited about that.
I agree, I will never get another IUD. Too many things they dont know about yet. I hate being the one they are learning from.
Good Luck with everything and keep me posted as to your progress. Its nice to know someone going through the same situation.

My mom had a copper IUD for years and liked it. I have read that it can cause heavy periods and other complications.

I like the idea of the Mirena, but it still has hormones which I want to try to avoid altogether. Also, my doctor said I wasn't a good candidate for that or Essure because I am sensitive to pap smears (wimpy with vag exams, etc). I sometimes faint after paps. He said the placement of the IUDs can be painful. Sometimes they have to go in more than once to get it in. I have the flipped uterus thing, which can make it even more painful (longer procedure...harder to place). I heard the follow up procedure to check the essure is very painful as well. I guess some women are better with this type of thing...especially with a non-floppy uterus.

I wish my husband would snip but he chickened out. I guess I will have a tubal...but now I am having second thoughts. I know we are done having kids (two is overwhelming enough for us, and expensive too) but I just don't feel right cutting yet.

I wish my doctor would have done a tubal when I asked during my C-section. She talked me out of it because they weren't sure my daughter would make it...she was preemie.
