I thought this was interesting and conversation provoking. I've made no secret about my own name dislike so this drove home for me.
Check the name of this girl out. Exert from link "A New Zealand judge has made a 9-year-old girl a ward of the court so that her name can be changed from Talula Does the Hula From Hawaii, the country's national news agency reported Thursday." The judge in the story was quoted at saying,"It makes a fool of the child and sets her up with a social disability and handicap," Do you agree. Do you think a poor name choice by the parent could be a handicap? You should see some of the other names in the list these poor kids have been subjected too. Suddenly Shawn doesn't seem so bad. What in the world are these people thinking, of course, I don't know them, and I don't know why the've decided to name thier child this, but come on. This is a joke, if you do not think highly enough of your child to give them an actual "name", not a catch phrase, then what other major decisions do you think you can manage for the rest of this childs life? Sometimes I still wonder if there should be an aptitude test you have to take before you get pregnant...lol. Momma always said, life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you'll get. As I've said in other posts, I generally try not to judge or criticize the names that other people choose to give their children even if I think they're "unusual." I have a somewhat "unusual" name.
That being said, this (and some of the other examples given here) IN MY OPINION is taking it too far. I think going to this extreme does set the child up to be ridiculed, but more than that it gives the impression (obviously to the child too in this case) that the parents think the child is a joke as well. There are a lot of names that are ripe for teasing, but for the most part the parents give them with good intentions and can provide support to their child during the teasing. That doesn't appear to be the case at all in this situation. Gwenyth Paltrow's Apple doesn't sound so strange next to Talula Does the Hula from Hawaii, does it? |

That sounds kind of silly to me. But I guess some parents get a little carried away. I can't imagine what some are thinking (or not thinking) when they name. The one thing I know I wouldn't want to do, is give a child of mine a name that was easily made fun of. But nobody thinks exactly alike ~ so...names run the gamut, just like people, lol.
And I remember quite a while back there was a thread or topic relating to odd baby names on The Ledger. I don't know if this was a posted link there, or just one I came across, but this site has some funny names that parents have given their kids. It has some funny things on it, I haven't read through all of it, it has many different pages to it, but sounds like somebody had fun dissecting names. I just enjoyed the site simply learning how many different and sometimes strange names people can come up with. http://www.notwithoutmyhandbag.com/babynames/index.html Just call moi Rachel or Gjee. When I was younger, I ALWAYS hated my name. I swore that when I turned 18, I was going to change it. LOL
But thankfully it wasn't anything like this. I think this is rather horrible for a child and I am glad that they are sticking behind this child to change it. ~Shiloh~ |
