I am looking into this for Lillian. I have not pierced her ears. Moms, what age was the big day for your little ones?

I never did, but a lot of moms have their babies ears pierced as infants.

However, I don't see the harm really at an earlier age. In fact, it might be easier. I just chose to let my girls make that choice when they were ready, if ever. (Now my 18 year old is quite fond of having her ears pierced and has multiple piercings, but she started years ago, sometime in middle school I believe with the first one.)

Okay Shawn, you know my baby would pick her ears too bad if you got them pierced at this point. If she were younger, and not so used to picking at stuff already from her excema (cough cough), it'd be different. I chose to have my first holes done when I was about 4, with a lot of encouragement from Dad. Since Lilly is my little mini-me, I'm sure that as soon as she realizes earrings aren't just a thing she can pull on, she'll want hers done too.

personally I would wait till they were old enough to want to get it done, I was 13 when i got mine done and I got it done 3 times even though I am allergic to all earings and do not wear any now except for special occasions. I also would not want my child to be allergic like I am its painful.

Mamachele,
I believe that the type of earring (or maybe I should say what that earring is made from?) could be the issue?? Or did/do you have problems with ANY type? I understand that either stainless steel or 14K are the best ones to use for less reaction, usually from nickel or brass, I think.

I do believe I have hard of simply whisper but I have had 18K gold from my brother and still cannot wear them for more than a couiple of hours. But I keep trying.

We had my daughter's ears pierced when she was 3 months old (as soon as she received her tetanus and could get it done).
We've had no problems with her pulling on them or getting infected. We have lost a couple so we had lock backs put on her good earrings and have had no problems.
I also had mine pierced as an infant, and personally wouldn't have wanted it any other way. As she gets older if she doesn't like them, I won't have a problem with her taking them out and letting them grow closed.

My daughter is 1 and I am going to let her make the decision. I know my doctor does it for $30 which includes the studs so that is where we will go once the time is right. For now she has a gold bangle bracelet and a gold chain ankle braclet. She pulls at both and I have spent many a time backtracking through stores looking for her jewlery that she has thrown off..LOL!

My husband and I discussed it for some time before we actually went through with a decision. We did get our daughter's ears pierced when she was right at 8 months old. She's had them for about 6 weeks now and hasn't touched them. I do think it was easier for me, personally, to have it done in infancy with my daughter. Her reaction wasn't even close to what I had expected, and I handled it better than I thought I would, too. I think her being so young made it a little less "dramatic", if you will. She cried for a minute, but after that, it was forgotten about. Just my experience, best of luck with your decision.

With my first daughter I got her ears done when she was 13 months. With my second daughter we've not done her's yet. Her doctor told us to hold off because she gets ear infections often and they may end up having to put in tubes. He said lets see if she grows out of the ear infections that way we won't have to worry with ear rings if she has to get tubes. (Fit being touching the ears after the tubes are in)

My parents did mine and my sisters when we were 9 years old. They gave us the choice.

Savannah was seven months when we had hers done. My husband about cried when she screamed. It was tough for a few minutes then we all settled down. We do have to make sure the backs are secured like was mentioned. She looked sort of like a boy after she was first born and even though she was dressed in all pink people still persisted on calling her a he/him. So we decided on the ear piercing. Most adults don't have their infant sons ears done. Not that I have noticed anyway!

Ann, I had the same problem, Lilly has my eyes and that is it! She looks so much like hubby, I guess it is hard to see a little girl in that face when she looks so much like her daddy. Everyone thinks she is a boy even with pink flowers everywhere. Blue is one of my favorite colors, but I have steered clear of it until Lilly can get more hair. I also considered the piercing hoping people would realize she is a little miss.

There is great advice on here, thank you ladies for giving so much information.

At this point I think it is to late. She naturally is a "picker" and I think that she would grab at them and pull them out. Plus I worry about her having the problems I did. I have had my ears pierced probably 6 times or more, for the same hole! They would get so infected, to the point of needing antibiotics twice. I would have to let them grow up.
