VACCINE CASE DRAWS NEW ATTENTION TO AUTISM DEBATE:

"ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- The parents of a 9-year-old girl with autism said Thursday that their assertion that her illness was caused by childhood vaccines has been vindicated by the federal government's decision to compensate them.

"We are very pleased with the government's decision," Hannah Poling's father, Dr. Jon Poling, a neurologist in private practice in Athens, Georgia, told reporters Thursday. "It has been eight difficult and heartbreaking years since our daughter's injury."

A federal program intended to compensate victims of injuries caused by vaccines concluded last November that Hannah Poling's underlying illness that had predisposed her to symptoms of autism was "significantly aggravated" by the vaccinations she received as a toddler and that her family should therefore be compensated."

WORLD AUTISM DAY: APRIL 2, 2008:

LARRY KING LIVE

Happening right now:

Jenny McCarthy is currently on Larry King live speaking about Autism and how it has effected her life and her son, Evan (now 5y, diagnosed in 2005).

On Larry King Live, there is a number 1-800-676-2100 that you can call to ask questions.

On Larry King Live, it was stated "there appears to be a DNA mutation passed from the father in which DNA can be tested" in order to better diagnose as well as treat or prevent an onset of Autism from a predisposition.

Jenny McCarthy's position is this:

"The CDC may have silenced our children, but they will never silence their mothers. We need this fixed. We need things changed."

We are having an autism awareness walk at my son's school. I know we are over in Hernando County, but the link also includes T-shirt sales. Any little bit helps! Smiler

The best way to get to Brooksville is probably by doing a mapquest search. I often go the back way which is by taking highway 98, but it may be easier to take I-4 to I-75. We are about an hour north of Tampa.

I do have school the morning of the walk. But I will be showing up around lunchtime. The Human Services Club that I am a part of at the College is sponsoring a booth (as are many other organizations.)

My son is very excited. Where we were living before, little attention was given to special students. It makes him happy to see our community standing up and doing something.

Oh, thank you for the link to the Lakeland event!

Does anyone know of a Lakeland pediatrician that wouldn't mind working with parents to develop a different vaccination schedule than the norm (similar to those recommended in some places for autism prevention)? Thanks!

I can also add that Watson Clinic is very against ANY change with the vaccination recommendations and scheduling and WILL turn your name/family in to the State Health Department who WILL in turn harass you to no end about vaccinations.

Clark and Daughtrey's Dr. Enlow will work with families, however, used to exempt for Religious Reasons and was called by the Health Department and told she could not do that. So, she has to refer all families who want to opt out of vaccinations to the Health Department. This information was provided by the Receptionist via telephone. From my understanding Clark and Daughtrey on a whole has good doctors, however their staff can be problematic. Which can be typical.

I find it interesting that the Health Department has told doctors they are unable to exempt families and must refer them. Only in this way can families be tracked, you realize.

When you go to the Health Department, you are asked to provide your child(ren)'s Social Security Number. Upon refusal, they just look it up from their data base connected with the state from hospital births. Then they just supply it on their forms anyway. It is the government's way of keeping track of those who veer from the "norm."

Some families we know even recommend NOT obtaining a SS# at the hospital or even thereafter. The only reason for a SS# is if you are collecting government monetary aid for medical reasons for your child or for employment, which wouldn't apply to your child(ren) anyway.

I suggest you call around and have a list of prepared questions, such as how willing are the Pediatricians to work with families on waiting, staggering, or declining vaccinations. You CAN do a consultation, usually free of charge, with any doctor(s).

Good Luck to you! Smiler

AMISH AMERICA

http://amishamerica.typepad.com/amish_america/2007/05/amish_autism.html

From that same article:

http://www.upi.com/NewsTrack/Health/2006/07/28/the_age_...ill_introduced/3532/

Yet another article presented:

http://amishamerica.typepad.com/amish_america/2007/03/polio_and_whoop.html

"Reading this reminded me that last time I was in Amish Indiana I ran into whooping cough.

Whooping cough? Sounds like 'dropsy' or 'colic', one of those Dickensian-type illness terms you never hear anymore.

But apparently whooping cough, or pertussis, is a lot more common than I thought, with 30-50 million cases worldwide, causing around 300,000 deaths a year, according to this wiki.

A mom of one of the sick kids asked me if I had had my whooping cough shots.

'Uhhh...I hope so..?' was my weak reply, hoping that ma and pa had remembered to take care of that for me.

Seems like it might not have mattered, since immunity through childhood vaccination usually just covers the early, most susceptible years, before weakening at adolescence."

My emphasis is the fact of Whooping Cough being noted worldwide, as opposed to just the Amish Community who has chosen not to vaccinate. Also, noting emphasis on the fact that vaccine "immunity" does weaken and wear off over time.

AGE OF AUTISM
OLMSTED ON AUTISM: THE CAPLAN CADRE:

http://www.ageofautism.com/2007/09/olmsted-on-au-1.html

"Last week Caplan took the next logical step, co-writing a piece in the Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics titled "Off the Grid: Vaccinations Among Homeschooled Children."

According to the abstract, "With the spectacular growth in the number of homeschooled students, it is becoming more difficult to reach these youth to ensure that they are immunized at all. These children are frequently unvaccinated, leaving them open to infection with diseases that are all but stamped out in the United States with immunization requirements. States should encourage parents to get their homeschooled students vaccinated through enacting the same laws as those used for public school students. This could be done by enforcing current laws through neglect petitions or by requiring that children be immunized before participating in school sponsored programs. As most states require some filing to allow parents to homeschool their children, it would be easy to enact laws requiring that homeschooled children be immunized or exempted before completing registration."

Let's put aside for the moment the issue of whether homeschooled kids ought to be subject to the same immunization requirements as publicly-schooled children. For me the issue that hits close to home, so to speak, is Caplan's welcome stipulation that such children are "frequently unvaccinated." Given that the estimates of homeschooled children is anywhere from 1 million to 2 million, that's a sizable pool of never-vaccinated kids -- in the tens of thousands at a minimum, I would estimate.

A big-enough pool, that is, to study total health outcomes between vaccinated and never-vaccinated American children. In June 2005, I wrote an Age of Autism column for UPI titled "Homeschooled," in which I quoted Dr. Jeff Bradstreet on an apparent lack of autism among the never-vaccinated children in that group. Here's how the story started:
--
Where are the unvaccinated homeschooled children with autism? Nowhere to be found, says a doctor who treats autistic children and is knowledgeable about the homeschooled world. "It's largely nonexistent," Dr. Jeff Bradstreet told UPI's Age of Autism. "It's an extremely rare event."

Bradstreet treats autistic children at his medical practice in Florida. He has a son whose autism he attributes to a vaccine reaction at 15 months.
His daughter has been homeschooled, he describes himself as a "Christian family physician," and he knows many of the leaders in the homeschool movement.

"There was this whole subculture of folks who went into homeschooling so they would never have to vaccinate their kids," he said. "There's this whole cadre who were never vaccinated for religious reasons."
In that subset, he said, "unless they were massively exposed to mercury through lots of amalgams (mercury dental fillings in the mother) and/or big-time fish eating, I've not had a single case
."

Bradstreet said his views do not constitute a persuasive argument that low vaccination rates are associated with low rates of autism, but it is worth studying. "That's not yet science," he said. "It doesn't rise to the level of a powerful observation. It's a place to say, OK, well that's interesting, what does that tell us?""

Dr. Eisenstein's book:

DON'T VACCINATE UNTIL YOU EDUCATE:

"Is the vaccine paradigm failing?

Why are more and more parents questioning mandatory vaccination?

Do vaccines really save lives?

Is there a connection between autism and vaccine?

Why is there still mercury in some vaccines - including the flu vaccine?

Don’t Vaccinate Before You Educate! is a result of Dr. Eisenstein’s lectures on vaccinations. Dr. Eisenstein brings his knowledge as a physician, public health doctor and attorney to help educate you on this very important subject. Dr. Eisenstein presents scientific literature both pro and con vaccine. He comes to the conclusion that scientific studies alone will not be enough to decide the benefit vs. the risks of vaccine programs. Therefore, he concludes that personal religious convictions, not scientific studies, are the main reasons, upon which to base your vaccination decision. Unlike most other physicians, he feels parents have a right to be involved in the final decision about vaccinating their children. He discusses vaccine law, religious exemptions with a heavy emphasis on the Illinois law. Don’t Vaccinate Before You Educate! will be the beginning of a path to educate families with regard to childhood vaccines."
