I do have a stupid question. My little girl Lacie is 27 mos old. When we took her to the Dr for her 2 yr check up. She said her "vaginal opening" was not open yet. She said it can be common but if it didn't open on it's own she would RX some hormone cream. HUH? My husband said leave it that way till she's 25 years old. haha
I am 36 and none of my friends can remember this about there daughters because they are all teens now.
Can someone tell me when this usually happens and what to look for. Thanks

I have never experienced this, but my friend's daughter had this happen to her. Apparently, it can be fairly common, the doctor did not discover hers until she was much older than your daughter and she had to have some minor surgery. The doctor told them they could have done other things if they had caught it earlier. Sorry I could not be of more help, but maybe that eases your mind a little

mimib, I've discussed this issue with a single dad before. He too was doing the hormone cream and really wanted to find a lady to do this for him because he was to apply the cream directly to the vaginal area and his daughter was school aged. From what I understood, if the cream did not keep it open then there could be minor surgery for this. I have also heard when a girl starts her monthly that hormones induced at that time can sometimes open the area. I would think you would need something done by that time, or it could be a real mess, but as a momma to a girl, I understand your hubby's sentiments, lol.
Do you know if there is a medical term for this? All of us moms could try to research it more?

Oh mimib, after re-reading your post, there is no such thing as a stupid question, please don't feel that way. I am glad you put it out there for us to ponder. It could help connect other moms with the same issue you are having as well.

I don't know how common it is, but my oldest daughter had the same issue. She's 7 now, but thankfully her doctor found it when she younger. I can't remember everything exactly (it's been awhile and our second daughter doesn't have the problem), but I think she was around 2 also. I had to put the cream on her (I don't know if it's right, but I always use a q-tip when putting any type of cream on my girls in that area) also. By her next appointment, everything was the way it should be. She's never had any problems. I think a friend of mine had to do the same thing. So, I don't know how common it is, but not only have I heard about it, I had the same thing with my daughter. She's been fine ever since! Smiler

Hope this helps!

I found a small area on it in my "todder 411" book. It's called "labia adhesions". It just said not to worry, they will RX the hormone cream.
I was just curious as to how common this really is and how long it usually takes. I had no idea they/we weren't born with it open already.
Why do females have so many things to go through???!!!

mimib i hate to admitt it but my daughter also has this problem she is 2 1/2 now. my doctor told me to try vaseline for a month and try to streach it. it didn't work for us. well we are using a hormone cream it's called premarin. and it works well and it comes with an applicator. because i will not touch that area i also use q tips. one thing i learned though is when your done with the cream i think u use it for 2 weeks but not sure, my doctor said to use vaseline for 6 months 2 times a day. the first time i didn't do this so now i have to use the cream all over again to open her up.
good luck and if you have any questions don't be afraid to ask. i never heard of this until my daughter had it happen. and yes it is common i have been told. but usualy a girl outgrows it my 2 or 3.

Thanks for the info. I may call her Pediatrician and ask about the cream. Her next visit isn't till she's 3 in January.

i wouldn't wait that long for her next visit. if you can go the cream route do that. i'm not a fan of surgerys untill a non invasive thing is tryed.
and the sooner the better. good luck. and after you start the cream you will start seeing results within a couple days.
