Group: Kids Should Be Cleared for ADHD Drugs
Stimulants such as Ritalin can present heart problems for some children.

The American Heart Association is suggesting new guidlines for Ritalin and similar drugs to rule out heart conditions. Link below,

i think adhd drugs are way over prescribed. i'm not against the drug. i do know a couple kids that really needed it and it was wonderful for them. but i have heard of a lot of parents who think there kids need it, when in fact there kids are just hyper because they don't get to do any activities.

Courtney,

cmcmickle80, I think you have all us moms intrigued. I would love more information of natural solutions to ADHD. If you could share what you use and your routine, it could be really helpful to other moms for consideration.

My son too has ADHD. I was one of those people who had believe that ADHD was way over diagnosed until I had my son.

Boy, do I believe in ADHD now.

I just wish there were a better solution for him. I really hate all the meds he is on.

He is adopted so I don't know too much about ADHD in his family history other than an older brother who was adopted by another single lady. The older brother too has ADHD.

He starts kindergarten in August and I worry about his behaviour. He was in ESE-PK4 this year and it has been a struggle.

My son who I am adopting is also diagnosed with ADHD. Since he was in the Foster Care System, the past Foster Parent(s) had him over medicated -- once he was placed with us, we journaled the periods of lows and highs. We then went to the doctor and discussed his medications.

His meds has been tweaked down a bit and we have seen huge improvements with his learning (currently 4th grade ESE). Now don't get me wrong -- we deal with more hyperactivity after he comes home from school - we just work on smaller amounts of time to teach due to his lack of attentiveness. We also monitor his sugars and caffine intakes and have better control of his diet.

The good news is our son is no longer a 'zombie' at school or at home after he takes his ADHD meds. The 'lows' aren't as low, and the 'highs' aren't as high.

I am not saying that is what all parents should do -- I am talking about my experience. But I believe journaling your child's behavior is important -- I've even talked with my son's teachers to get a 'feel' of his day while he is at school. This can be used to talk to your doctor to help them determine the right treatment plan.

You need to have patience... lots of love and patience.

There is a decent book that parents should read if your child has ADHD. 'Parenting Children with ADHD - 10 Lessons that Medicine Cannot Teach' by Vincent J. Monastra
