Just wondering if any of your deliveries had to be "vacuum assisted"? During delivery Lacie got stuck. The top of her head was showing but she would not budge!
This was my first and I was not familiar with forceps or vacuum assistance. Boy do I wish they would have done a C-section. I was so tired and out of it from pushing for so long I could hardly comprehend what my Obgyn was telling me. I do remember my husband asking, "is there any side effects on the baby?" My obgyn replied..."The baby might have a little raised red spot on the top of the head but it will go away."
HA, boy was he wrong. She has a 3 in by 3 in raised lump thats red and shows like a bald spot.
Lacie is now 27 mos old and has to have plastic surgery on the back of her head. The first few months of life it gets bigger and bigger. Thats why they wait till after 1 year of age to do any surgery. I know we have to do it before she starts school because we all know kids are cruel. I want it done, we are just waiting till she can communicate better and understand a little more. Maybe next summer. Plus I'm due with baby #2 in September so I'll have my hands full.
Have any of you had this with your baby or had any plastic surgery on them yet???????
I know alot of babies are born with them on their arms, face or trunk for no reason.
Please try never to use the vacuum assisted delivery if possible. I feel so guilty I did this to her. You should see the looks people give in puplic when she's in the buggy and they see the back of her head. It really hurts my feelings to see they're faces. It's different if someone asks me in a innocent way out of concern or interest. I don't mind sharing, I tell them don't ever have the vacuum assisted delivery. But other people are so immature and rude.

Mommy to Lacie, #2 coming soon !!!

I'm sorry this happened Frowner

I did have a vacuum assisted delivery with my first also - she was 9lbs 6oz and I needed help. I had an episiotomy and then the vacuum. We were fortunate in that her marks went away before we left the hospital.

However, I just wanted to say that I completely understand the rude stares and even comments from strangers - people sometimes can be very insensitive.

My son was born face up - I pushed for 2.5 hours and in that time the poor baby was coming out and in and out and out and in under my pubic bone - rubbing his forehead and the top of his head against it each time. He was born with massive bruising from the center of his forehead right back to the crown of his head.

When we were leaving the hospital - I was in the chair in the parking lot with the orderly waiting for my husband to pull the car up when this older lady came right up to me and said 'Gee that baby sure has a huge birthmark' - I was ready to weep right there and then. Part of it was the 'angel kiss' type birthmark on his forehead - the rest of it was bruising - and it took nearly two weeks to disperse. The birthmark is also gone - I can only see it when he is really crying hard.

Anyway - I didn't mean to take over your post - I just wanted to say - hard as it is - try not to let rude people bother you - it says more about them in my opinion.

Good luck with the surgery - and I hope that she can put this behind her and end the worry for you Smiler

Also, don't beat yourself up or feel guilty - you can only make the decisions based on what is right at the time - I knew nothing of any complications that could come from the vacuum, and I'm sure neither did you.

Albee,
Thanks for responding, your not taking over my post your helping me and maybe someone else learn about this thing called cephalohematoma. (wow what a long word)
I am so glad your little ones went away.
I am also glad my baby wasn't over 9lbs, OMG how did you not have a c-section! Mine was 7lbs 2oz I had a episiotomy, vacuum and then I riped even more! Gees I hope this doesn't happen when I have this baby in the fall.
