I AM THE MOTHER OF 3, 2 TWELVE YEAR OLD GIRLS, AND A BEAUTIFUL 3 YEAR OLD BOY, WHO HAS AUTISM, YOU WOULD NEVER KNOW THIS, UNLESS YOU SAW ME IN PUBLIC SOMEWHERE. I'VE BEEN THROWN OUT OF EVERY RESTAURANT IN TOWN, AND EVEN HAD TO LEAVE WAL-MART WITHOUT GROCERIES. DON'E GET ME WRONG, MY HUSBAND AND I LOVE HIM VERY MUCH, HE IS THE MOST WONDERFUL THING THAT COULD HAVE HAPPEN TO US, BUT IT IS HARD. I WAS WONDERING IF ANY OF YOU HAVE FRIENDS, RELATIVES, OR CHILDREN YOURSELVES THAT SUFFER FROM THIS DRAINING SITUATION.
THANKS

My youngest daughter (she is 4) was just diagnosed with Autism. This is a new thing for us and we are still learning about it. She had 1/4 of her brain removed in Dec 06 due to sclerosis. Because she has bilateral sclerosis of the tempral lobes, she has autism. We take her to MCH every three months. We actually have another appt. May 8th at Miami's Children's Hospital. They are the ones that did her surgery. They have rec that she follow a doctor here weekly for her autism, but I haven't been able to find someone that will do that. Miami offered to send me to thier guy down there, but I really don't want to drive weekly to Miami! Her attitude is great. She is a sweet, loving girl. She does not speak. She uses sign language and we just got her a Dynavox. We are trying to train her on that. She gets 10 therapies a week, some at home and some at St. Joe's. I am a stay at home mom so that I can take care of her. We tried to put her in preschool, but she has low IGA's and kept getting sick. We are going to try again in the fall. She has play dates all the time so that she can interact with others. She loves to play! If you ever need to talk, just contact me.
Thanks,
Michelle

Michelle and Shannon, I'm not sure if you want to hear, "I'm sorrys", but I truly am!

Being a mom to a healthy "average" child is tough, but to add concerns such as this to the motherhood realm is enormous.

Thank you for your stories and sharing. I wish you both a mound of luck!

1 Tired Mommy/Shannon ~ I will be praying for you and Rhett this coming week, that the surgery goes well and that you come through it okay too. I've never dealt with the serious health concerns that you have obviously had to face with Rhett, but simply as a Mom, I've had to face some very scary times between my four kids over the course of 18 plus years, and I know there's nothing worse to any loving Mom than the fears concerning one's children. I do have a 15 year old daughter with autism, but physically, she's been pretty lucky. I can't imagine what you've dealt with regarding on that side of things, but in other ways, I can relate.

One of the things I have had to learn, especially over the early more stressful years, is to take it one day at a time, deal with today, don't look too far ahead (as far as fears and worries go anyway.) It is true, 99% of what we fear doesn't come to pass, and it's the 1% that you didn't expect, often enough, that surprises one. Besides, it is impossible to step into the stream of tomorrow until tomorrow. I'll definitely be keeping your family in prayer.

hugs, love, and lots of prayers

Michelle Milam ~ I'm sorry to hear of your struggles too, again, I can't imagine what the both of you have been through on the physical side of this ordeal in addition to the autism, but I can keep you and your daughter in prayer. My heart goes out to you.

love, hugs, and a multitude of prayers

Shannon,

I know this sounds crazy, but there are people who have reversed autism through non-conventional means.

Have you ever considered having your child undergo any types of alternate-therapies which could possibly bring some peace back into you and your child's life?

I know this is a very controversial subject because conventional/allopathic medicine claims there's not much that can be done except to prescribe various drugs, etc, but those treatments obviously don't reverse any damage.

I am here to help. I'm not here to stir up trouble.

Please let me know if you care to look into this option.

By the way, I have nothing to gain from this except for knowing/hoping I've helped someone get in touch with a person who can work wonders in your family's life.

Here's an interesting article:

Autism Can be Treated - - Government health experts claim autism is an incurable disease

(EXCERPT):

Dr. Carolyn Dean, MD, ND and
    Elissa Meininger
    November 13, 2007
    NewsWithViews.com

“All truth passes through three stages: First, it is ridiculed; Second, it is violently opposed; and Third, it is accepted as self-evident.” --Arthur Schopenhauer

We are in the midst of a catastrophe. As of February 2007, the Centers For Disease Control (CDC) has admitted that there are at least 1.5 million children with autism in the U.S. affecting one in every 150 children and one out of 90 boys. Even these figures are probably too low and may not take into account the other categories being created to describe our increasingly challenged children. Pervasive developmental disorder, Asperger’s disorder are two other autism spectrum disorders that describe children with variants of autism. The incidence of ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) is one in ten children. As the saying goes, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that something is seriously wrong.

Government health experts claim autism is an incurable disease offering anticonvulsant and psychotropic drugs to control behavior and a behavior modification therapy called “applied behavior analysis (ABA).” They dismiss all other means of helping these children as “unproven.” Meanwhile thousands of children are back to full functionality by treating the damage caused by mercury toxicity using natural health therapies.

Our government’s slow and even deceptive response to this catastrophe is a major part of the problem parents of autistic children face. The CDC does not publicize the fact that in the 1970s only one in 10,000 children were diagnosed with autism, however, in the 1980s, this figure rose to one in every 2,500. Nor does it mention that the massive escalation of cases started in the 1990s coincided with the addition of several new vaccines to the compulsory childhood vaccination lists. Currently, every American child is expected to have 36 shots by the time they are six years old.

I have heard that some autism can be reversed by a wheat and dairy free diet. Not sure where to get more info on the topic but I'm sure a computer search will turn up something! Happy Mother's Day to all!
