We recently found out that our newest addition is a boy, and we just picked out the sports theme for his nursery.
Like the idea on this link we're going with the more muted, neutral tones (baby blue, khaki, sage green) rather than the primary colors.
It was neat to read some of the different ideas though!

Little T - YEA IT'S A BOY!!!!! Smiler

I'm editing because I am working on not being long winded. Wish me luck!

We started with a Pooh Bear theme, but never had the boys in the nursery anyway other than to change their diapers. They slept in w/us, then shared for a time, and now have their own rooms. We realized they needed their own space.

We went from Pooh to Sports when they were in the same room and we bought vintage gloves, catcher's mask, etc, even hung my husband's old high school gear up too. Only to realize along with vintage comes age and with allergies, not a good thing.

Last year we added some color to their rooms, but allowed them to choose for one wall, they ended up wanting some of the other's choice, too, so we added a stripe of that color on a second wall.

In one son's room we painted a really deep blue. He LOVES everything all-American (eagle, American Flag, President), so his paint color choice was so fitting: "Star Spangled Blue" He has an American Flag throw and an old campaign sign from when one President came through town and I took the boys on my own to see him. That was 4 years ago, but he had to have that sign up.

Our other son wanted red (the choices so match their personalities to a T!) and his color choice was: "Licorice Red" Having a sweet tooth with attitude fits. Smiler

We allowed them both to pick out posters they wanted to hang in their rooms. It is so fun to see what they are attracted to individually.

One has a slew of Beatles posters, one titled "And He Shall Be Called" referring to the names of Jesus, another one with a huge smiley face he wanted immediately above his pillows.

Our younger son has Spiderman and mind you we've never seen a movie one. Also Cars and they both chose a very psychedelic one with circular colors that makes my head spin!

For one I bought simple valences of alternating red and blue wide stripes and the other we just left what was already in there when we bought the house, very neutral but has some of the same blue he chose.

To personalize their rooms, they wanted their Kindergarten/First Grade Graduation pictures framed and their diplomas. I put up a large peg board for their school work so they can proudly display what they've accomplished.

We have family pictures in frames on their desks and some on their peg boards and they really like their rooms.

Once they are toddlers they can begin to make choices for their own rooms that make them more theirs, I'd recommend doing just that. We used to give our boys two or three options of things to choose from even as young as 5 months old.

I used to have huge plans for my husband to execute, he'll tell you! We had an airplane theme once, made my own valences and had the airplane sheet set. I wanted my husband to use the photo of our boys in the airplane cockpit to create a huge wall cockpit with switches, lights, buzzers, the whole thing that our boys could sit up to and play pilot. My ideas are many times larger than my husband's abilities or time availability! So, execution isn't always our strong suit. lolol

So, it was a relief to just pass onto the boys the responsibility of doing something in their rooms or at least making the choices (within reason). They love them and feel comfortable in them. That matters most.

I am looking forward to hearing all the room designs others come up with or have done. This'll get my creative juices flowing again, oh no!!! Big Grin

I'm adding that I like Shawn's idea of taking one main thing (like Ryan's Dino quilt and for us, all-American) and pulling from that whether colors, patterns, or object for focus. It's grounding

we were thinking if we have a boy next about doing a truck and tractor theme. paint the walls green and paint roads on the walls and put a road play rug on the floor. i have a a couple old tractors from when i was little(my dad always gave my sister and me a tractor for christmas).
i told my husband he has to wait till the babys born before he can do up his room idea. i don't want to find out.

For baby boy themes, I did Noah's ark for Ethan and sage Hey Diddle Diddle for Ryan. These really could be unisex.

When Ryan moved out of the nursery/study to his big boy room, he went to dinosaurs.- He has a cute pastel dino quilt and we used it as inspiration for the rest of the room.

I think boy themes are fun. For Ethan's room we have a safari theme, Austin has dirtbikes.
I like the space theme too, maybe we will work that in with Ryan later.
