Our next project isn't in need of a business, we'll do it ourselves, but I wanted your opinions on bathroom counter materials.

Do you recommend tile, granite? What else is there? We really need to redo our main-house bathroom counter and are thinking of adding double sinks rather than replacing with just one again. We have the space for the 2, but not sure on materials.

Help...... Confused

Well I would say granite, just because I hate cleaning grout. And with smaller children, they get everyting in the grout.

(Still not sure how mustard ended up in the bathroom, back to Shawn's post earlier(eyeliner), I know it was my fault.)

Anyway, if you have the room I would definatley go with the double sinks, it is soooooo convenient. You'll actually use less granite, but I don't really know if its cheaper, depending on the price of the sink. But you don't know how much you'll love 2 sinks until you have them.

Michelle, I have corian in my bathrooms and granite in my kitchen. I love both types of surfaces.

Granite is porus and will absorb oils/grease. I would definitely seal it. It is pretty easy- you just rub it on. You never know if you might have lotion or baby oil on the counters?

Corian is a great material.

I would have done granite in my bathroom too but I have a lot of slate in there and didn't want the granite to compete with it and chose a more solid colored corian.

You can see it on the front flip right now-lol that Shannon just referenced.

Either of those are great- I love the earthy-ness of granite the best.

Dark granite hides stains better and lighter corian or solid surfaces hides scratches better.

So if you are set on a lighter color you could go with corian - or just seal the heck out of the granite or
darker color - go with granite.

Thank you both, Shawn, I recall the granite in your kitchen, not what is in your bathroom. But, I'll look back at the pic here again. lol

You guys'll see, I think I have room for two sinks, but it'll definitely demand a change in the cabinetry, too. Which is fine by me. We're planning on framing out the huge wall mirror to appear as two separate mirrors. Doing that to our masterbath as well.

I couldn't remember corian, thanks Shawn. We've heard that is a good option, too. Oh, and the tips on which to get and color-wise, too, awesome!

Anyone have ideas on where to go and prices?

BTW, Shannon, I hate grout issues, too. Ick, but sometimes, you just can't get around it.

Well, our boys sound like 10 not 2, so I better go see who they're forcing to "prepare to battle" - each other or their poor dinosaurs and snakes! lol Wink

Anyone know someone that can fix ac's... or have an extra one they don't use... Ours has been out for 4 days now and its starting to get the best of me... Its not so bad at night since its been rainy and helps get rid of some of the heat- we put fans in the windows and let the kids sleep in the livingroom where its cool. But its been up to 92 inside when its 84 outside...

Any help that wouldn't "break" us would be great...
Father-in-law has the part to try to replace it but since he don't have the tools to cut the line he can't do it...

We have a mobile & have seen the show. Boy, could we ever use their help! Three adults, and a two year old---just two bedrooms! We are in such need of another bedroom. Money being the biggest issue! We have plenty of land to add on, but no money or ability!! But, love and faith get us through.

Shawn and littleT,

My husband laid Pergo two years ago through the entire house all by himself and around his work, it took a couple of months to do.

We were told they were very durable, epsecially wiht high traffic areas and children. We had many knicks early on and now, since our second home flooding last year, had one entire half the house pulled up and we had tile laid later in the year last year.

The Pergo is VERY difficult to keep clean, you can't run a vacuum over it, it'll scratch. I vacuum my ENTIRE house with our Dison vacuum 4" brush - at least it's convenient in getting the baseboards and trim! Then I mop it all and some of the tile (what we alreay had) gets wax. It's a TON of effort, but I DO love the tile far more than the Pergo!

We have put out soooo much money on our floors in the past two years between toilet basins flooding and then our washing machine flooding more than 40 gallons of water into our home I am sick at the thought sometimes. We had the tile guy lay it on a 45' angle and it does look very nice!

Make your flooring choices carefully. We finally went with the least destructible material possible, tile, although right now, the type escapes me! I'll get back with that. Not all tile are good for children or high traffic areas and may chip, then if they chip, are they colored all the way through or will they show white-ish? It took us months to decide on the tile.

Anyway, I wish I'd had your info, littleT on the price/sqft.

Shawn, I would go with real wood over laminate! From the standpoint of resale value and it'll last longer with the children and their friends, etc.....

I LOVE what ja2003wow said about "patiently waiting for Ty Pennington" that is funny! I really enjoy home improvement shows. I saw a show the other day while the boys were in quiet time on the Country Music Channel called Mobile Home Disasters where a single father of 5 boys asked for help. One of the boys was sleeping down the street at grandma's house, dad just didn't have enough room. It was sad and heartbreaking, but I absolutely LOVED how that Dad did what he needed to to keep his family together. He even traded in a well paying job to become a teacher so his schedule was on track with his boys!

Anyway, I don't know what happened to mom, I came into the show about 5-7 minutes in and missed it.

They did a super job of getting that mobile home to what would benefit that family.

I am a sap for stories of the heart. I sit and am thankful to God someone out there is doing for others in this way. We do our small part, but sometimes, I wish we could on a larger scale.

Sorry for digressing.....lol Wink

** I totally hear this- Its 2 adults and 4 children in our 2bedroom 2 bath single wide. We have the land to add on, build a new house or put a new double wide here- just money is not on our side. My parents had a single wide this same size and I am trying to talk my husband into getting his parents to move a few things and make this a three bedroom- the girls room and the livingroom would be a little smaller but it would give us an extra room that wouldn't cost an arm and a leg-

Our ac is working now- FIL friend came and "hot wired" it - we have no heat till he comes back in a few months with a new thermostat- but in Florida we don't need the heat just the ac...

Has anyone read this yet? Considering we've been discussing countertop materials, this is an interesting read.

awww, thanks for thinking of me! Wink

And on a side note, for those who are getting tile laid, I'd recommend having it done on a 45' angle. Makes the room look bigger and comes out looking really nice! Adds a little something to the room. Now, it will be a little more expensive, but not out of the ball park, but that'll depend on what your budget is, the company/person you choose, and how worth it you feel it is in the resale value of your home. Shop around!
