I remember those years. With my middle daughter I really thought it might never happen. With her autism came some obsessive compulsive traits, so, when she develops a habit it can be incredibly difficult to get her to change it, or vice versa, getting her into a habit isn't always easy initially.
Each kid has their own time~frame. But I know with jobs & school, it can seem like there is a rush sometimes for parents, and with others who tell you this or that regarding what you should or shouldn't do, it can be frustrating as a parent to know what's the best thing. I think sometimes the worst mistakes we make as parents, is to get stressed over what we think we HAVE to do because So and So said so, or this book or that recommends it. If a parent uses their head, and instincts with these things, it usually proceeds naturally on course. And even with the exceptional children, those with problems or disorders, a parent can use their heart, intellect, and instincts to ultimately decide what is BEST for THEIR child in the long run. In other words, there is no set time that's perfect for every kid. And sometimes if we parents get in too much of a hurry, we just screw things up that would've come natural a little bit later. And schedules are wonderful things for kids to learn ~ as long we remember, some parts of life refuse to be scheduled, and rightly so. As a part-time single mom (my hubby is gone 5 days a week working on location), a student, and an employee and having a 2 year old still using a pull-up like it was a diaper was quite frustrating. Especially, when baby-sitters who keep her on nights mommy's in class have different mind sets - one says "potty potty potty" and the other doesn't mind if she uses the potty or just sits in her nice nasty pull-up. So - we've gone at our own pace - just like her daycare said to do. (THEY ARE MARVELOUS - they did not mind that she was not completely trained & no she was not held back - matter of fact she won't be 3 til 9/9 and she's been in the 3 year old class since Dec.) So, since she
knows to poo-poo in the potty - I've taken away the pull-up option for pee. All day long @ she uses her panties - and THEN at night she puts her pull up on for bed (okay so I'm a horrible parent.....she sleeps with me! But when they do show interest ENCOURAGE - even if you have to come up with your own WOW YOU DID IT SONG! GOOD LUCK TO ALL THE MAMAS!!! |

Haha! We had one of those "Wow You Did It Songs"! It worked great, although it was somewhat embarassing for my husband to be in a public restroom with our 2 year old going "Yay! Peepee on the potty, Daddy is a hottie!" (it was all we could think of to rhyme at the moment it was originally needed!)

I can't believe someone didn't reply back to that cute song littleT so I have to! That is so funny, I can just see your hubby singing that song in public, girl, that makes me want to roll around on the floor and laugh HARD!
Thanks for my good laugh for the day! ~Mother to Brandon, Austin, Ethan, Ryan and Lillian~ Breaking Lillian of the bink. Just call me, "The Bad Guy" |

Shawn, I agree!
littleT, that is soo funny! We had a potty song, too, not nearly as inventive or funny and now we're way past the need so I can't even steal it for our own use. I agree that daycare can create pressure and extra problems and hassles about potty training. However, in our case, we have to wait for our son to move to the 2 year old class, before it starts full time at school. So right now, it is only being enforced at home. Until we get the school going, our son will cooperate sometimes and then ignore it the rest of the time.

LOL, I think I might! I myself think Eddy is pretty hot! It works for me! And to think I had been doing it wrong this whole time. I have been just random jumping up and down like an idiot singing, "yay- yay, you pee peed in the potty- then repeat. ~Mother to Brandon, Austin, Ethan, Ryan and Lillian~ Breaking Lillian of the bink. BTW, I did the same "lame" song and dance, Shawn. But, after our second was pottied, I did see one of the Nanny shows introduce the pee-pee song with one family's child once, so we can't be too far idiot gone! lol Michelle "The Lord is my strength and my song; He has become my victory." I had to go find the song, was wondering what ya'll were referring to, lol. I know I would have done almost anything, from slightly funny to outright ridiculous, if it would have helped my middle youngun to potty train. I'm quite sure I inspired a few grins from time to time, although, I'm not sure that was entirely what I was (or she was, for that matter) aiming for.
