All things pool safety related---

We walk and ride bikes in our neighborhood and I have to say I am angered by some people who allow their fences and screen doors to remain wide open and unsecured leading to a pool!

This is so DANGEROUS.

I thought this would be a good place to post about POOL SAFETY. Shawn and Eddy talked a bit with my husband and myself about pools during blueberry picking, sharing real and valid concerns.

We DO have a pool. We also have a chain link fence enclosing the back yard and screened pool enclosure that we keep locked by padlocks and the boys do NOT know the combinations.

We also keep the screen doors closed and locked as well and have made the habit of locking them when we are done in the backyard.

For opur boys' safety (and the assurance of anyone who visits), we also have a pool safety fence that we installed before having our younger son. The boys have never paid it any attention, have never climbed on it, pushed it or bothered with it. It stays up ALL THE TIME. Even when we are using the pool, we just open one portion of the fencing at the stairs we use and play on.

We also have sliders that lead to our pool with pins with knotches that must be aligned in order to put in or pull out as well as a security system that has a chime mode when any door or window is opened.

We also never leave toys in our pool because children WILL try to get them out.

I think we do a lot of things right, we just wish our boys knew how to swim! We're working on it, but have never liked water over their heads. At least we've gotten them to blow bubbles out their noses with their little eyes peaking above the water. We don't want them to be afraid and have heard horror stories from others who've had theirs take lessons only to have them so afraid to even enter a pool!

We take these measures not only for our own children, for the safety of other children, too.

As a pool homeowner, I plead with other pool owners to take responsibility in the safety of children with your pool!
