Anyone have good information on snakes for pets? types for children? What have you had?

My sister had a snake for 3 years. It was great. She knew that it was a snake so yes they’re not domestic and will bite. It was a common garden snake or glass snake that I had caught in the yard. I remember I was looking into getting myself a snake one year and the research I found was that corn snakes are good but you have to buy (or breed your own) food for them. You can find them in a lot of pet shops... well maybe not. I was looking in pet shops in Kissimmee not Lakeland. I remember one shop had a tall glass vase (3 ft.) in the window. It looked like it had colored string confetti in it but it turned out to be 50 baby corn snakes from yellow/white to red and everything in-between! There’s a great book on Amazon called “My first Snake” by Elizabeth Walker that I have seen over the years as a good guide to, well, your first pet snake! http://www.amazon.com/Your-First-Snake-Pet/dp/1852790474 Call some pet stores or better yet some reptile houses for tips. Maybe you just might find someone with a new clutch of pets to be!

Thank you. I'll look into the "My First Snake" book.

Also, Ball Pythons make excellent snake pets. They don't get very big and by nature they are very docile.

I have owned MANY reptiles and snakes over the years. Ball Pythons are the best "starter snakes" by far. Snakes are not as easy to take care of as you may think...and these are the easiest.

I plan on teaching, and this would be my choice for one in the classroom.
